The charismatic Somaliland Ambassador to the Republic of Kenya, Bashe Awil Omar, expressed the Republic of Somaliland’s disbelief and dismay at the continued, relentless efforts on the part of Somalia to sabotage Somaliland relations with the international community.
The Ambassador
Somaliland is often accused of harboring delusional dreams of owning its senior partner in the ill-fated 1960 union, partially misled by a world which, until so recently, humored it for reasons that were never fully or justifiably explained.
The Ambassador, specifically, referred to an official communication the weak Somalia government in Mogadishu submitted to the United Nation’s Security Council protesting how officially and respectfully the United Arab Emirates received His Excellency the President of Somaliland, Musa Bihi Abdi, and his delegation in Abu Dhabi earlier in the month.
“We as Somaliland wish to express our dissatisfaction at the recent complaint made by the Government of Somalia at the UN Security Council, about the recent successful official trip by H.E President Muse Bihi to the UAE,” the Ambassador posted on his Pages on Social Media.Ambassador Bashe made it very clear that Somalia has no jurisdiction whatsoever in a Somaliland that it neither owned nor ruled.
“I want to reiterate here that Somaliland is an independent country with internationally recognized borders and democratically elected governments that is well functioning. Somaliland is free to engage with other countries officially without the permission of Somalia as our union with Somalia was voluntary so as was our exit from the union,” he stated.
The matter being so, the Ambassador wondered, why did Somalia tax itself to meddle in the affairs of a country that required no permission of it to relate with whoever it wished in order to ensure that it continued to develop and flourish as a country, as a nation.
“Somaliland is free to engage with other countries officially without the permission of Somalia as our union with Somalia was voluntary so as was our exit from the union,” the Ambassador pointed out.
“We as Somaliland will continue to engage with the International community for the official recognition and Independence of our country,” he added.
Ambassador Bashe Awil, echoing the general sentiments of Somalilanders to their erstwhile misguided neighbors, spelled out once more that Somaliland wished well for Somalia but would never, ever expose its people to a fate similar or worse than that they survived while that union lasted from 1960 to 1969 and under the Southern-dominated military regime from 1969 to 1991.
“To our neighbors, Somalia we are willing to create a broad space for peaceful interaction and trade, but we will leave no room for any form of reunification activities,” he concluded.
Somalia has made several attempts to sabotage Somaliland development by unsuccessfully trying to drive a wedge between the 28-year-old de facto, democratic government and international partners. Now it has started to, inexplicably, try to dictate who related to Somaliland and who should not as if anybody needed Villa Somalia permission to do so.
