A delegation from the Somalia/Somaliland missions of the European Union, and the United Nation’s World Food Programme (WFP) and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) met with several ministries at the Ministry of Planning and National Development (MoNPD) offices, Monday, to discuss on-going development projects, national support priorities, disaster preparedness and the impact of the recent Cyclone Sagar.
Mr Johan Heffinck, the EU-ECHO Head of office representing the EU civil protection and humanitarian aid operations in Somaliland/Somalia led the international partners’ delegation which, also included Deputy Head of the Somaliland WFP Office and Head of FAO in the country.
H.E. Awale Shirwa, Minister of Planning, talking to the press at the end of the meeting stated that the talks held at his office covered a variety of issues all of whom were of monumental import to the nation.
“Each of the ministries and offices present at the meeting outlined development priorities in own sector as well as on progress reports pertaining to ongoing projects already being implemented on partner financial and technical support,” he said.
The Minister underlined that central to the discussion of these issues was prioritization of activities in view to the optimization of projected outcomes.
“Hiking up both quantities and qualities of production potential in the areas of agriculture, health, fisheries and livestock in order to keep the nation’s food basket replenished from within was discussed in depth,” Minister Shirwa stated.
Urgent needs bared by the devastating Cyclone Sagar which heavily hit the western and coastal areas of Somaliland were raised with the international partners who pledged to chip on on succour initiatives for victims.
Mr Heffinck confirmed that his delegation was much delighted with the outcome of its meeting with the Somaliland ministries and departments.
The Minister of Planning and National Development, Awale Ibrahim Shirwa’ ‘Lo’don’, Minister of Livestock and Fisheries Development, Hassan Mohamed Ali, Minister of Health, Dr. Hassan Ismail Yussuf, Minister of Agriculture, Ahmed Mumin Seid, VM of Planning Engineer Hussein Buuni, Director of Food security and Disaster preparedness, Faisal Ali Sheikh and the Director Generals of Environmental Development and Planning, attended the meeting on the Somaliland side.
