Somaliland: NEC announces number of verified eligible voters, Political parties accept

The National Electoral Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Somaliland released the list of eligible of voters in upcoming elections.

The announcement followed voter registration exercises carried out throughout the country in 2016.

According to NEC voters registered in varied numbers across all the regions.

Results released to the media show that Marodijeh, hosting the capital of the Republic of Somaliland, Hargeisa, clinching 36% of the total number of registrants approved for one-man-one-vote rights. This is equivalent to 312 634 possible voters in the region out of a national total of 873 331 – a number that indicates that the registration of voters is far below the expected, eligible numbers.

Leading officers representing the three national political parties welcomed the provisional results of the voter registration process as set forth by NEC.

The international community, UN and other international NGOs were present at the occasion.

The numbered of voters registering for the 2017 elections and beyond is much higher than the annulled results recorded for presidential elections in 2010. See below.

Sool pleasantly surprised everybody by coming out in force to register despite the fact that there were a number of inhibiting, stringent conditions which the raging drought imposed on eligible registrants.
