Two blasts followed by gunfire were heard near the entrance of the main airport in the Somali capital, local witnesses said.
The al-Shabab armed group told Al Jazeera it was responsible for the attack.
White smoke could be seen billowing over the city after the blast on Tuesday.

Breaking: Huge blasts heard in Mogadishu
Powerful twin blasts were just heard around the airport of Mogadishu, Somali capital on Tuesday morning.
Eyewitnesses say they could see a thick black smoke rising from the scene of the attack which is near to the main base of African Union mission in Somalia (AMISOM) at Halane Base.
The explosions are thought to be suicide car bombs, followed by heavy gunfire.

Blasts heard near Mogadishu airport
Big explosions have been heard near the airport in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, local media have reported.
Thick smoke could be seen rising from the area, where there is also a base for African Union peacekeepers.
Local journalists said the blasts had been caused by two bombs.
There was no immediate word on any casualties.
