Grade I winner Somali Lemonade died Jan. 23 from complications of foaling, according to breeder Helen Alexander, sister of the 7-year-old mare’s owner, Caroline Forgason.A daughter of Lemon Drop Kid , Somali Lemonade was in foal for the first time and was bred to Frankel. She was residing at Lofts Hall Stud in Essex, England. The foal was also lost.
“Her owner is devastated,” Alexander said.
During her racing career, which spanned 2011-2014, Somali Lemonade won four graded stakes, including the 2014 Diana Stakes (gr. IT) by a neck over eventual Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) winner Stephanie’s Kitten.

Somali Lemonade was bred in Kentucky by Cina Forgason out of the Nureyev mare Chic Corine. She finished her 24-race career with a 6-3-3 record and $981,796 in earnings for trainer Michael Matz.
