New York City midfielder Frank Lampard has been ruled out of a Major League All-Stars fixture against Tottenham on Wednesday with a calf strain. The 37-year-old suffered the injury earlier in July and is yet to appear for his new club.
Lampard joined New York from Chelsea in July 2014, but spent last season on loan at Manchester City.
The former England player was selected for the All-Star match despite never having featured in an MLS game.
Steven Gerrard, who left Liverpool after 17 years to join Los Angeles Galaxy at the end of last season, was also picked, despite having played just one half of a friendly when the squad was named.
Gerrard, 35, scored twice on his competitive Galaxy debut in a 5-2 win over San Jose Earthquakes but suffered a 3-0 defeat by Houston Dynamo in his second match on Saturday.
New York Red Bulls midfielder Dax McCarty will take Lampard’s place in the squad for the game against Spurs in Colorado.
