Nigeria’s army claims to have rescued 200 girls and 93 women during a military operation to win back the Sambisa Forest from Boko Haram militants.

However, despite intelligence suggesting otherwise, the girls abducted from a school in Chibok in April last year are not thought to have been among those freed.View image on external websiteAlong with the operation in the Sambisa Forest, Nigeria’s army has in recent months seized back most of the land previous under control of Boko Haram.

The Chibok girls were last seen in a video made by the militants video. Their abduction – over 200 of them – sparked global outrage with many joining an online campaign to free them using the hashtag BringBackOurGirls

Last October the Nigerian government said it had secured an agreement for a ceasefire and the girls’ release but Boko Haram denied this.
