Sammy Almahri returned to the UK today after being arrested in the African nation in January
Murder suspect Sammy Almahri has appeared in court after being extradited from Tanzania.
The accused fled to East Africa just before the body of 28-year-old Nadine Aburas was found in a Cardiff Bay hotel on New Year’s Eve.
Almahri, a US national, spoke only to confirm his name and that he understood the charges against him.
Almahri not granted bail
Almahri wore a dark blue shirt an dark suit jacket. Looking relaxed and clean shaven Almahri told chairman Hynel Thomas said: “I don’t have an address here”.
The Chairman told him “this court cannot grant you bail” before sending him to Cardiff Crown Court to appear before a judge at 9am tomorrow morning.
Aburas discovered on New Year’s Eve
Miss Aburas, a student, was found in a room in the Future Inn Hotel.
The discovery of her body on New Year’s Eve sparked an international manhunt involving South Wales Police, the NYPD in New York and Tanzania’s head of police.
Almahri, 44, was tracked down to Tanzania in January, three weeks after the body of Nadine Aburas, 28, was found at the hotel in Cardiff Bay.
Days after the discovery of Miss Aburas’ body, her mother Andrea issued a heartfelt tribute to her daughter.
The 58-year-old said: “Nadine was my baby – she was such a beautiful and kind-hearted girl.
“She would never hurt anyone, she just wanted to help people. She was a born healer for people – always putting others first.
“The loss of Nadine has torn my heart in two. Her family and friends are absolutely heartbroken by what has happened to her.”
