President Obama met with Prince Charles of Great Britain and his wife, Camilla, Thursday, and sounded envious of the royal couple’s popularity in the U.S.
“I think it’s fair to say that the American people are quite fond of the royal family,” Mr. Obama told reporters as he posed for photographs with Charles in the Oval Office.
“That’s awfully nice to know,” the prince responded.
“They like them much better than they like their own politicians,” Mr. Obama added.
“I don’t believe that,” Charles replied.
The prince went on to say that he had a “fantastic” visit Wednesday at Mount Vernon, George Washington’s estate in Virginia. He had visited there 45 years ago.
The prince and the duchess of Cornwall arrived in Washington on Tuesday, and have visited the Lincoln Memorial, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the National Archives and the Shakespeare Theater Company.
