Drone strikes hit Al Shabaab hideouts in Somalia

Unknown drones have carried out airstrikes on two Al Shabaab hideouts in Southern Somalia, a regional governor has confirmed to the media.

According to Abdulkadir Siidi, governor of Lower Shabelle region, drones targeted on Tuesday morning Al Shabaab hideouts in the region. He did not mention on the casualties, but said will confirm later.

The drones pounded Ambareso village, which is close to the formerly Al Shabaab stronghold port town of Barawe.

Al Shabaab officials have not spoken of the airstrikes.

Further information cannot be independently verified as the media’s access to the area is restricted.

Somali ministry of Security spokesman recently said that the government will use drones for the first time in its operation against the al-Qaeda-linked militant group.

Last month, Al Shabaab‘s head of external operations was killed in a US drone airstrike targeted on a convoy in Southern Somalia.
