Kampala’s thriving trade in Europe’s second-hand clothes

In Uganda, second hand clothes still offer the best bargain. They are often of better quality – coming from Europe, Japan and the US – and cheaper than new clothes. The trade in the capital Kampala is so big that it’s the hub for used clothes in East Africa. And it has given rise to a new kind of buyers- the personal shoppers. As part of BBC’s A Richer World series Catherine Byaruhanga went to a second-hand clothes market to find out more:

The market, the bargaining, the buying and the selling…feels and sounds the same all over Africa. One would not know the difference between Hargeisa and Kampala in this particular kind of garment trading.
